Psalm 37:4-7
Delight yourself in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your
heart. 5 Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it
to pass. 6 He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your
justice as the noonday. 7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not
fret because of him who prospers in his way…
When I first read this verse I felt like I had just won the
lottery. God is going to giving me everything I have hoped, dreamed, and prayed
for! Although this is all very true, I think it’s easy to skip over the first
part of Psalm 37:4 and go right to the second part. God loves to give good
gifts to His children. He won’t give us stones when we ask for bread (Matthew
7:7-11). BUT what is this verse really saying?
Delight yourself in the Lord. What does that look like? It
looks like finding your joy, purpose, and strength in relationship with Jesus
Christ. A few of the words that stick out to me in verses 4-7 are delight, commit, trust, rest, and patiently.
When we truly begin to delight in our relationship with Jesus, are desires are
no longer our own but His. We desire to do His work. We desire to run the race
set before us and fulfill the God given call on our lives. It is an exciting
thing to find your call but it can also be overwhelming. When we commit our way lives to the Lord, trust His leadership, rest in knowing that He is good and patiently wait for it to come to pass,
God can do GREAT things in us and
through us.
When we are whole heartedly pursuing our relationship with
Jesus Christ we truly find our purpose. Our God placed desires are awakened. I
don’t think this verse is meant to tell us that God is going to bless us with
that Bentley we have been desiring (although He totally could). What it is
saying is that when we pursue our relationship with Jesus, we will find new joy
and purpose for our lives. Jesus’ purpose for our life is bigger than we can
imagine and attain in our own strength.
